Undergraduate Certificates
Certificate in Professional Writing. The Department of English offers a certificate program in Professional Writing. This certificate is offered to both degree seeking students as well as non-degree seeking students desiring professional/personal advancement. Non-degree seeking students will be admitted to the University via established admission guidelines. The certificate is designed to prepare students to work as professional writers in a wide variety of positions, including but not limited to grant writing, publishing, technical writing, and technical editing. The certificate is comprised of 18 hours of coursework.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL WRITING CERTIFICATE
REQUIRED COMPONENT:
Technical Writing (EN 300W)
Advanced Composition (EN 310W)
Genres in Creative Writing (EN 355W)
New Media Writing (EN 445W)
ELECTIVE COMPONENT:
Six hours from the following three credit-hour courses:
Language and Gender (EN 334)
Writing about Film (EN 396W)
Writing Protest and Dissent (EN 435W)
Technical Editing (EN 439W)
Grant Writing (EN 442W)
Total 18 hours
Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The Department of English offers a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This certificate is offered to both degree seeking students as well as community persons intending to work with speakers of other languages both in the United States and abroad. This certificate DOES NOT constitute K-12 licensure in Alabama. Non-degree seeking students will be admitted to the University via established admissions guidelines. The certificate is designed to provide a broad knowledge of the structures of the English language and the basic methodology of ESL instruction.

Graduate Certificates
The Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing is a certificate program designed to give students who already hold a B.A. or a B.S. the opportunity to enroll in courses to earn a graduate certificate. The certificate will aid those already enrolled in graduate programs who wish to have more writing in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The certificate will also aid students who wish to prepare for futures in the writing community as publishing writers or as members of terminal degree programs.
This certificate program requires 15 hours of credit. Students may transfer up to 3 hours of credit from another program to apply to the Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing. Admission to the certificate program requires a formal application through the Office of Graduate Admissions.
The Graduate Certificate in Rhetoric and Compositon is a certificate program designed to give students who already hold a B.A. or a B.S. the opportunity to enroll in courses to earn a graduate certificate. The certificate will aid those already enrolled in graduate programs who wish to have more training in the theory, practice, and teaching of writing. The certificate will also aid students who wish to prepare for futures in the community college classroom or as members of terminal degree programs.

The College of Education and Human Sciences offers an 18 semester hour Graduate Certificate in TESOL for individuals who wish to have training in working with English language learners but who do not wish to pursue the Master of Arts in Education degree or Alabama Professional Educator Certification. Individuals who are interested in becoming certified to teach ESOL in a public school in the state of Alabama or in another U.S. state(s) should refer to the Master of Arts in Education ESOL program for master’s degree and certification requirements. Admission requirements: candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in any field from an approved institution, and meet all University graduate admission requirements including those for specific program of study.
